On Monday, May 11, 2026, the Rockingham County School Board unanimously approved a four-year contract for Superintendent Dr. Larry Shifflett, extending his leadership of Rockingham County Public Schools through June 30, 2030.

School Board Chair Sara Horst said the extension reflects the board’s confidence in Dr. Shifflett’s leadership and the meaningful progress the division has made under his direction during the past three years.

“Dr. Shifflett is a servant leader who models integrity in every aspect of his work. The board is pleased to continue this partnership.”

Since becoming superintendent in July 2023, Dr. Shifflett has advanced the Rockingham County Public Schools Comprehensive Plan, with a strong focus on student safety, academic excellence, workforce support, and meaningful community engagement. Working collaboratively with the School Board and the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors, he has also prioritized responsible stewardship, strategic long-range planning, and thoughtful fiscal management to ensure continued investment in student success and the division's long-term strength.

A lifelong resident of Rockingham County and graduate of Rockingham County Public Schools, Dr. Shifflett began his career in the division in 1997 as a social studies teacher at Wilbur S. Pence Middle School. Over the past three decades, he has served RCPS as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, director, assistant superintendent, and, for the past three years, superintendent.

Horst said Dr. Shifflett’s deep roots in the community and his visible leadership style continue to resonate with students, employees, and families.

“As Superintendent, Dr. Shifflett has remained deeply focused on advancing student outcomes, supporting employees, and strengthening relationships across Rockingham County Public Schools. He is highly visible and accessible, regularly attending school and community events and maintaining open communication. His presence and engagement continue to strengthen relationships with families, staff, and the broader Rockingham County community.”

Dr. Shifflett said he is honored by the board’s continued confidence and remains committed to serving the RCPS community.

“I am grateful to the School Board for their trust and support,” said Shifflett. “It is a privilege to serve the community that shaped my family and me. I will continue to ensure every student has access to a high-quality education and every employee feels supported in their work. Together, we will continue building on the strong foundation already in place across Rockingham County Public Schools.”

Dr. Shifflett holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Virginia and both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education from James Madison University.
